'Shirdi Sai' first Telugu film to release in Africa:
Nagarjuna (Interview)
Chennai, Sep 5 (IANS) Southern superstar Nagarjuna says his
"Shirdi Sai" will be the first Telugu film to release in Africa and
that the story will be uplifting and touching.
Directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, the film is releasing in
around 800 screens globally Thursday.
"'Shirdi Sai' is the first Telugu film to release in
Africa as it is home to thousands of Sai devotees. The film is also releasing
in many other countries where previously no Telugu films were screened",
Nagarjuna told IANS over phone from Hyderabad and added that "the film
will be uplifting and touching."
Shot in about 60 days, "Shirdi Sai" will be highly
message-oriented and spiritual.
"Though it sounds cliched, but I'm fortunate to get
these kinds of roles. I'm very excited. I will be carrying forward the legacy
of my previous films 'Annamayya' and 'Sri Ramadasu', also directed by K.
Raghavendra Rao", said the 53-year old.
Almost 80 percent of the shoot happened at Annapurna Studios
in Hyderabad, including dubbing, VFX and digital processing.
The cast also includes Srikanth, Srihari and Kamalinee
Mukherjee in key roles.
This is dailogue-writer Paruchuri Brothers' 333rd film.
M.M.keeravani has composed the music for the movie.
Meanwhile, Nagarjuna's "Damarukam" is almost done
and will enter post production very soon, while his "Love Story" will
be wrapped up by November and will hit screens during Makar Sankranti.
What made you do Shirdi Sai?
I've been hearing about Shirdi Sai for the last 10-15 years. People say you should go to Shirdi. Miracles are happening there.
Shirdi Sai was against caste and religion, one of the things that I too believe. He spread this message of harmony a hundred years ago. I like that.
I see faces light up when they go to Shirdi. There must be something to it.
There are photographs of him. I felt it must be very interesting for me to get
into it.

I never did rehearsal for Shirdi Sai role: Nag [Interview]
Incarnating as Shirdi Sai Baba on silver screen is Akkineni Nagarjuna, who is quite enthusiastic about his big
release. Far from doing any kind of homework to metamorphose effectively
into the effervescent Baba, he never even tried hard for anything.
"It is the easiest film I have ever done in my life", a happy Nag
reveals.
In this lively conversation, Nag talks about what went into
doing Baba, and more.
Excerpts:
Using imagination:
Both Annamayya and Ramadasu had their share of
imagination. The writers/director used whatever literature was available
regarding Annamayya's life, his kirtans, etc. For Sri Ramadasu, except
the fact that he built a temple, it was wholly the makers' imagination that you
saw in the film.
Different when it came to Shirdi Sai:
However, we could not take liberty while writing Shirdi
Sai. We could not deviate much because so much material on his life is
available in the public domain. Yet the director tried to make it as
interesting as possible. He wanted to show what was never shown in any of
Sai films. The film mainly is inspired by Sai's philosophy and thought
process. Without showing the miracles he did, which was the case with
Vijay Chander garu's films, we are trying to show how he led his life during
his childhood, how he disappeared at the age of 14, where he went, how he
returned as an enlightened person.
Conflicting versions:
There is no one definitive account of where He spent his
life after his disappearance from Shirdi till he returned to Shirdi as an
enlightened mystic. We have shown the part quite imaginatively.
Dramatised dialogues:
All the key direct disciples of Baba have a pride of place
in the film. The dialogues are dramatic, the conversations between the
Baba and His devotees have been shown creatively. Even MM Keeravani's BG
score adds a dramatic value to the proceedings.
The source of inspiration:
It is the much-revered 'Sai Charitra' that we used as a
source of inspiration. People did suggest me to watch Vijay Chander's and
Manoj Kumar's films, but I chose not to watch because that would have had
impact on me. I read this book to get into the skin of my
character. The real conversations which Baba had with His devotees are
well documented in this book. I used to think, 'Why does he have to
shiver when he was old when he was supposed to know Kanda Yoga and all?'
You will not draw comparisons between previous Sai films and
this one.
Easiest film:
I always felt that Shirdi Sai was the easiest film I have
ever done. They made it quite easy for me. When I did Annamayya and
Shirdi Sai, I did some homework. It was all impromptu in this case.
there was no much effort in getting the get-up right or sporting the make-up.
In fact, I was surprised that everything was getting completed easily and on
time. I, at some occasions, even yelled at the unit saying, 'How can it
be completed so fast?' Everyone from the light boy upwards has been very
dedicated towards the film. All the actors acted as if it was their film.
After the Badami schedule, I refused to leave the place
because I was not convinced that it could be done on time!
The Baba magic:
It is not surprising that He has the biggest
following. People follow him regardless of caste, creed and
religion. His teachings are in simple language, there are no hard and
fast rituals accompanied with His worship. If I have been talking about
him publicly, it is because I too am inspired by Him. His philosophy is
close to my heart. When I spoke to some of his devotees, I was moved to
see them cry with pleasure describing about their experiences. Their
total faith touches me.
He never allowed to be glorified like a God. He
allowed haarthi to be done to Him but on one occasion - Guru Pournima.
KRR garu being a big Sai devotee himself, he has done amazingly well.
The hoardings of the film are ubiquitous because entities
like Lanco and Manjeera want to use put them up. I must say that Baba is
doing His own publicity. (Laughs)
Lot of expectations:
Unlike Annamayya, when people did not believe that KRR garu
could make a film like that with me playing the saint, people have lot of
expectations from Shirdi Sai. We are sure of garnering very good
openings. The second half is, especially, very touching and
uplifting. There are no heavy dose songs and exaggerated emotions.
The film is much like Baba, calm and placid. It is very entertaining for
2 hrs and 10 mins.
Damarukam after Shirdi Sai:
Damarukam will be released sometime in October, and I am not
thinking that people might give me a tag after they watch Shirdi Sai. It
is wrong to think like that. Moreover, the attention span of people is
less nowadays. They watch a super hit movie before the fourth week and
wait for another movie.
Actually, Damarukam was to be released in May itself.
It has got delayed ever since because of the CG works. We felt that a
Masala song was needed and that is why we are shooting one.
Shirdi Sai Movie Photos |
My kind of films:
Yes, I want to do at least 3 films every year. That
was the way I planned this year also. But Damarukam got delayed. I
don't want to make films for myself. I want everybody to enjoy them,
appreciate me; that alone gives me a great high.
Love Story is entertaining. Bhai with Veerabharam is
an out-and-out entertainer. I have a film with Durga Arts in the
pipeline. Besides, Bellamkonda Suresh is going to meet me in the next
week.
I think my best is yet to come. At 50, life is seeming
much better than it seemed at 40.
Akhil's entry:
I have left to him to decide when he wants to become an
actor. I told him that there is so much competition, and asked him to
take the plunge when he feels that he is ready to face the competition.
Ticket rates hike:
I strongly feel that ticket rates should be hiked. The
prices of everything have shot up by 3-4 times in the recent years.
Differential pricing system, as seen in Chennai and Maharashtra, may be
implemented. (He did not explicitly say this, but was in agreement when
some journos talked about this system prevalent in some States). Film
industry has been a soft target for the government. It taxes us easily
and at first instance.
Film school brains:
It will take at least three more years before brains from my
film school come out. We are running the school very
professionally. We want to make it a great institute to learn in. I
want foreigners to come here and get training! In Jan next year, some
students from California will come as part of an exchange programme.
Reception:-
The film received extremely positive reviews.NDTV quoted
that "Far different from regular cinema with cliched performance,
run-of-the-mill storyline, director K Raghavendra Rao's Shirdi Sai takes you on
a spiritual journey of self-actualization, purity and sanctity." Times
of India also gave a good rating stating that "A film like Shirdi Sai
calls for strong conviction and Nagarjuna's move to take up this film is
commendable." Entertainment oneindia praised the individual performances
and technical aspects of the film. Rediff gave 3 stars for the film out of 5
summarizing that "Shirdi Sai is not just a devotional to be seen by an
older audience. Anyone can see it for the relevance of the simple teachings of
the saint."
Synopsis: It's the life story of Shirdi Sai Baba, starting
from when he first appeared in Shirdi as a kid to his eventual Samadhi.
Movie Review:-
Legend has it that revolutionary freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak was a devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba. Apparently it was Sai Baba who predicted that Mahatma Gandhi would win India its independence from the British Rule. "Oka mahatmudu vasthadu, ayana valla mana desaniki swathantram vasthundi," (A Mahatma will come to our country in the near future and help us get our independence) he remarks to Bal Gangadhar Tilak who comes to seek his blessings and know if he will live to see his life's dream of India's independence.
Well clairvoyance is only one of the many aspects of divinity. The movie establishes his divinity with many miracles - like lighting lamps with water, curing the sick with his touch, saving his nephew from falling in fire, levitation, cooking food with his bare hands, and his soul leaving the body for three days before coming back to life... the works. If it weren't for the miracles, we would perhaps struggle to accept divinity in flesh and blood. Such is the nature of faith you see.
That's not all. The movie even tries to paint Sai Baba as a secular patriot in
essence with a nationalistic agenda to boot! "Sab ka malik ek",
"Allah Malik" he keeps uttering from time to time. "With whose
permission dif you step into our motherland and establish your business empire
in this holy land," questions Sai Baba to a haughty British Colonel Wales
(Sri Hari) in another scene in the movie. The filmmakers have stayed true to
the Sri Sai Satcharita, regarded by many as the undisputed record of Sai Baba's
life, in letter and spirit.
The non-believers can take a walk for this is a movie for the Sai Baba followers. So errors of logic and historical accuracy do not matter, in any case our filmmakers are not known for matters of nuance and craft and this movie is no different.
Cinematic glitches aside, what works in the movie is that it focuses more on the spirit of the teachings rather than the miracles that Sai Baba performed, which was the crux of the previous films like Shri Sai Baba Mahatyam, widely regarded as the definitive film on Sai Baba. As far as viewing experience goes, this film falls short of the standards set by that K Vasu film but it has a few moments nevertheless.
The background score by MM Keeravani is decent, but doesn't exactly give you the goose bumps. The performances are adequate, but there are just too many characters and as a result, not many register. Nagarjuna seems to have made a conscious effort to look the part, work on his voice modulation and underplay the dialogue delivery. It's a performance that's more honest than emphatic.
The writing proves to be a stumbling block as the lines just don't have that effect. Forced comedy tracks involving Sayaji Shinde look mediocre at best. It's isn't a film that will douse you with that feeling of divinity, but makes for a one time watch. How much you like this film might just be a matter of how staunch a devotee of Sai Baba you are.
