Padma Lakshmi was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India Her father
was a Pfizer executive
and her mother Vijaya, the first wife of her father, was a nurse who
specialized in suicide prevention. Her mother tongue is Tamil. She
grew up shuttling between her grandparents in Chennai and
her mother in New York. She is her parents' only child from this
marriage. Her parents separated when she was age one. They divorced a year
later. Both parents later remarried, and Lakshmi has a younger paternal half-brother
and half-sister. The latter formerly worked as an actress and classical dancer
but is now pursuing a career with children with special needs. In an interview

Pfizer to manage her career. That was kind of like rubbing salt in the wound. I
didn't understand why he wanted that relationship with her, and not with
me."

In 1984, when she was 14 years old, Padma was in a car
accident in Malibu, California, causing an injury to her
right arm that required surgery, which left a 7-inch scar between her
elbow and shoulder. The incident happened on a Sunday afternoon as Padma was
being driven home from a Hindu temple in Malibu. She remembers a flash of orange,
looking over to see the large car upon her. Padma describes the event in the
April 2001 edition of Vogue, saying, "Being in a car crash was like
an exhilarating hallucination, an unbelievable moment that oddly remains one of
the most beautiful images in my memory." The car left Padma with
injuries that included a fractured right hip and a shattered upper right arm.
"Padma Lakshmi nearly 'bursts out' of her dress"
Padma Lakshmi barely managed to stay covered when she
recently appeared at an event in a dress, which was a size too small for her.
The 42-year-old model, who is mainly known for her impeccable style, had worn a
floor length strapless flesh coloured dress that was a bit tight for her at the
red carpet of the 2012 Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.
The American Indian actress tried her best to flaunt her
womanly curves in the dress with silk lacing details, exposing small sections
of her back.
The mother-of-one wore her loosely curled hair back in a
ponytail, kept her make-up simple and opted to wear a pair of small diamond
earrings.

Padma later congratulated director Dan Savage on Twitter.
"Congrats to the governors award Emmy winners for their
"it gets better" video movement: Dan Savage and Terry Miller!"
the Daily Mail quoted Padma as tweeting.
The former wife of Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie also posted a
picture of herself and comic Kathy Griffin to her Twitter page, which was
captioned- "Me and my Ginger homey."
Padma Lakshmi scores a rare fashion miss as tight dress
struggles to contain her curves at the Creative Arts Emmys
She rarely puts a foot wrong whenever she steps out on the red carpet as she is arguably one of the most stylish women on television.

But last night (Saturday) at The Academy Of Television Arts
& Sciences 2012 Creative Arts Emmy Awards that wasn't the case for Padma
Lakshmi.
The 42-year-old failed to show off her usually flawless
stylish ways when she took to the main event in a dress that appeared to be a
size too small.

Padma Lakshmi Thinks You're Weak for Liking White-Wine Spritzers
Despite the popularity of white-wine spritzers,
one celebrity does not support enjoying a glass. Top Chef host Padma
Lakshmi made her feelings on spritzers, men drinking wine, and luxury wines
known to Esquire, in some choice (and not so choice) words.
Lakshmi, who is working with Sterling Vineyards in Napa
Valley, Calif., on its Ultimate Host competition, talked with Esquire writer Matt Goulet about wines.
Want to drink like Lakshmi? Her opinions from the interview, below:
• (When asked about men drinking wine) "I'm in
favor of it. I think wine is such a big universe that it's kind of like food —
it's intimidating to a lot of people, myself included. But if you approach it
wine by wine, and if you like a wine that you drink, now with your phone, it's
so easy. Just take a picture of the label. You learn about it. You learn where
it comes from and what the soil is like and why you like it. And that'll lead
you to another wine."
"You can't drink [wine] alone. It's all very
subjective. Wine, like food, is so emotional. If you think about it, so much of
the courting ritual is surrounded by wine and food. There's a built-in romance
to wine."
• (When asked if a bottle of wine can win a woman over) "It
can speed up the process. I don't think just any bottle of wine. But it helps.
It's not a miracle-worker."
• (When asked how she feels about white-wine spritzers) "No.
That's a real pussy drink. And I don't mean that in a good way."
'Padma Lakshmi says she needs a dress for Emmys'
She was stunning in a hot pink Monique Lhuillier dress and
matching lipstick Saturday night at the designer's show during Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week, but "Top Chef" host Padma Lakshmi said she's still in
the market for an outfit to wear to the Emmy Awards.
"I am shopping for dresses," she said, adding that
her main priority is comfort.
"Do I feel good in it? Do I feel comfortable? No matter
how good you look in a dress, if you're not comfortable, it's going to
show."
She said she felt great in her Lhiullier dress, which,
although it fit her perfectly, had plenty of stretch.
"It feels kind of like I'm wearing a soft wet
suit," she said.
Lakshmi was in good humor when a reporter repeatedly
mispronounced her name on camera before the show.
"That is some funny [stuff]," she said with a
laugh.
"Four Glasses of Wine with Padma Lakshmi"
On the 38th floor of the Empire State Building, Top
Chef host Padma Lakshmi has set out four bottles of Sterling Vineyards
wine. Lakshmi is working with Sterling Vineyards on their Ultimate
Host competition.
PADMA LAKSHMI: I'm not going to be drinking — well,
except for today, because this is work. But other than today, I'm not going to
be drinking much until the Emmys. But if Top Chef wins, I expect a
huge barrel of something. Sterling also does the Emmys. Too bad they can't get
the voters drunk, so they don't vote for Amazing Race anymore. [Sighs] But
we digress. We digress.
Instagram may have been cluttered with pictures of angry New
York storm clouds on Saturday evening, and the tents were no less crowded at Monique
Lhuillier’s show. Odette Annable benefited from a particularly majestic
piece of scheduling that had her at Lincoln Center for Hervé Léger in the tents
during the afternoon and then back for Monique Lhuillier at night, with pretty
much the entire crazy storm system coming and going in between. “That is lucky,
because there was a full-on tornado going on out there. It’s wild,” she
marveled. And it’s even more fortuitous because she was clad in a sleek white
dress that would have turned a wee bit pornographic if it had been drenched.
Apparently, even Mother Nature respects a girl’s need for privacy.
Though this is her second fashion week, Annable balked at
being called a fashionista – “That term freaks me out!” – but based on what we
heard her tell a reporter, we think she has this whole thing figured out:
pre-show wine, a hair and makeup crew, and loud music. “It’s all about having a
good time,” she said. “This whole thing is so dreamy.” She also said it was a
blast deciding which of her three Lhuillier options to wear, and credited hubby
Dave Annable (from Brothers and Sisters, and the upcoming 666 Park
Avenue) with helping her sift through everything: “I showed him a couple looks,
and he was like, ‘Okay, go with that one, and that one.’ He was actually
helpful.” And also apparently correct, because she looked like a million bucks.
That is a valuable commodity in a guy smart lady.
Annable had a weirdly difficult time getting to her seat,
thanks to some foreign journalists who were obsessed with getting her photo
holding their talisman. One of them jammed a red and white stuffed devil into
her hand and then started snapping her picture, while she confusedly— but
politely, and very gamely posed with it for them. Later, we saw the same group
approach Padma Lakshmi with the same request, and Padma seemed even more
perplexed— and, frankly, kind of awkward and (beautifully) annoyed about the
whole thing.
Luckily, a nearby TV reporter gracefully intercepted on her
behalf, pretended to need to talk to her, and then smoothly blocked out the
Plushie-Pushers. It was so well done that we’re pretty sure she owes him at
least a couple of cocktails. He’s going to have to fight for her attention, though.
When Padma came out from backstage – all flowery dress and flowing hair and
gorgeous Padma-ness – the dude behind us leaned forward. “Who is that?” he
wondered. We explained, and he leaned back and shook his head, admiringly.
“Padma,” he repeated. “No shit.” Get in line, buddy.
